There are two kinds of cashback credit cards. The general kind which gives a certain amount of credit per amount spent and the more specific kind which gives rebates for specific items and specific places.
General Cashback Cards
The broader kind of cashback cards calculate what amount of money to credit to your account from a specific percentage of your money spent. For example:
HSBC's Gold Cashback Visa
Cashback rates:5% for dining
3% for gas from Caltex (only)
0.5% for everything else
To calculate:
PhP2000.00 was spent for dining, PhP5000.00 was spent for gas from Caltex, and PhP5000.00 was spent on everything else for this credit cycle.
Calculated cashback:
-5% of PhP2000.00 = PhP100.00
-3% of PhP5000.00 = PhP150.00
-0.5% of PhP5000.00 = PhP25.00
-Total cashback amount = PhP275.00
You can see that a greater amount was from dining, which has a 5% cashback offer. That is why it is best to know the cashback percentage rates if you use a cashback card. I can personally say that this is a preferred credit card of mine. I enjoy using it because it not only gives a good cashback rate but also has many, many exclusive offers from HSBC for airline tickets, discounts, and special promos. More importantly though, HSBC offers an amazing installment plan with partner merchants.
Requirements:
Annual income of PhP200000
Other good examples are:
Security Bank Cashback
Cashback rates:1% for shopping
2% for dining
3% for utility spends
4% for gas
5% for groceries and gas from Seaoil branches
You can see that the cashback percentage is higher for the HSBC card, but this one has more cashback options
Requirements:
Annual income of PhP360000
Citi Visa Cashback
Cashback rates:0.2% for gas, travel, shopping, and dining
2% for Meralco bills
6% for groceries
Even more visible here is how the Citi card would be a better choice for groceries
Requirements:
Annual income of PhP180000
Partner-Specific Cashback Cards
These cards will give you even better cashback or discounts for transactions done with the issuing bank's partner merchants. BDO and RCBC in particular have several.
