American Express credit cards are only issued by one bank in the Philippines, Banco de Oro or BDO. Even if there are very few available in this country, the fact that these cards are issued by BDO will grant you access to BDO's enormous network of allies and partners. That usually means lots of discounts and promos!
There are six available cards, all being issued by BDO. Some people might say that applying for an American Express would be risky because they are unsure of card acceptance. Well, BDO and American Express are both growing everyday. I say give it a try!
Blue from American Express
Annual (actually, monthly) fee: PhP150
Annual income requirement: PhP180000
This is your everyday, everything card. Nothing special. It gets you into BDO's network to let you enjoy all the privileges and promos. That includes the American Express Selects program which is exclusive to American Express cardholders
American Express Green CardAnnual fee: PhP1800
Annual income requirement: PhP480000
The Green card is your usual classic card. It's just like the Blue card but it will also grant you access to the American Express Membership Rewards program. PhP180000 spent will waive the annual fee.
American Express Gold CardAnnual fee: PhP3000
Annual income requirement: PhP850000
This one is a step above the previous. More points, more privileges, more promos. There is also a cashback version of this card. The annual fee is waived if you spend PhP300000.
American Express Platinum CardAnnual fee: PhP5000
Annual income requirement: PhP1800000
Another step up. In addition to all the already mentioned perks, you get access to American Express' travel services and counselors who help you plan trips and find flights. To waive the annual fee here, PhP600000 must be spent.
American Express Cathay Pacific CardAnnual fee: PhP2400
Annual income requirement: PhP480000
This is the card for you if you like to travel around Asia. This card gives you 1 Asia Mile for every PhP42 spent (both local and overseas) and 1 Asia Mile for every PhP42 spent on Cathay Pacific flight bookings. This will also grant you Marco Polo Club Green membership.
American Express Cathay Pacific Elite CardAnnual fee: PhP5000
Annual income requirement: PhP1200000
If you travel A LOT, this is for you. This card will give you 1 Asia Mile for every PhP38 spent locally, 2 Asia Miles for every PhP50 spent overseas, and 2 Asia Miles for every PhP38 spent on Cathay Pacific flight bookings. You will also get Marco Polo Club Green membership.
CONCLUSION
Okay, BDO is the only issuer of American Express cards in the country. We all know that BDO has extensive network of allies and partners. Discounts and promos! If you want to try it, I say go for it! If you want these cards, you can apply at one of these websites. I did, and they all work!
